Research and Application in Chinese Child Psychology

Child psychology in the People's Republic of China has its theoretical background embedded in a long cultural history based on marxist dialectical materialism. However, as in other countries, child psychology is conducted as a modern scientific discipline with emphasis being placed on a holstic approach and practical applications. We present a review of recent research within the area of child development as it is being run at some universities and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Such research covers cognitive development, language development, the moral development of children and youth, the development of self‐consciousness, the identification and promotion of supernormal children and the mental development of adolescents. From among the many applied studies in Chinese child psychology, research on the learning of mathematics and studies on the training of qualities of thinking are presented.
