dancer with raised right foot
View through National Gallery of Denmark
Steinbach combines objects from all kinds of contexts: art, crafts, the domestic sphere, supermarkets, and second-hand shops. He is interested in the new meanings that can arise out of such juxta-positions. He often seeks to abolish traditional hierarchies between e.g. art and everyday objects. Here, he has placed a (copy of a) statuette by the French artist Edgar Degas on top of a rickety children’s stool. Steinback is also interested in how things are displayed, whether in private settings or in museum contexts, and the impact this has on our perception of things. In this case a custom-built display case is also part of the work.
