Viev of Lake Fure near Rudersdal, North Sealand

View through National Gallery of Denmark
Eckersberg found the subject of this painting on an excursion, conducted in the company of several students, to Rudersdal, north of Copenhagen, in early July 1833. He initially did a drawing at the site (private collection, cf. Hornung & Monrad, 2005, 256), but his work was interrupted by rain. Some sixty days later he returned to Rudersdal to paint the view, this time selecting a slightly higher vantage point. The new location required him to start again. He worked on the painting for as long as was possible on a one-day trip, which would also have required occasional pauses to allow the paint to dry. He resumed work on the painting upon returning to Copenhagen, and after an additional three days of work he completed the painting on 14 August. The excursion on 11 August seems to have been the final study trip that Eckersberg conducted with selected students in order to paint in the open air.
Værkdatering: 1833 Maleriet blev påbegyndt den 11. august 1833 foran motivet og malet færdig i atelieret tre dage senere, den 14. august (jf. Eckersbergs dagbøger).
