The Augustan Era: Fragments of Politics and Social History in Augustan Thessaly The “Augustan era” used by Thessalians was by no means an Aktian era, as one would expect from that very same name as the Macedonian ἒτος σεβαστόν. The Thessalian Confederacy adopted it in 10/1 AD, for a reason still unknown to modern scholars, and had been using it for more than half a century. This new chronology shows how complex were the relations between Thessaly and Roman Imperial power during the whole reign of Augustus; they sometimes happened to be good, leading to grant of privileges, such as the eponymous strategia held by the Emperor, or the right to struck a bronze coinage, to which Thessalians responded willingly by honouring the Emperor through the very first form of imperial cult or by bearing an epithet strucked on his name; but it didn't prevent Thessaly from hard times and dissensies, from local riots to imperial justice and punishment.
