The Woman Artist and the Uncovering of the Social World

View through CrossRef
Marie-Gabrielle Capet (1761-1818) was a painter of modest reputation who is now best known as the pupil of Adélaïde Labille-Guiard. Unrelated to the royal family whose surname she shared, Capet never had enough reputation or fortune to establish financial independence. Yet her work contributes to one of the most significant developments of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries: the discovery of society as an object of observation and systematic study. “Social science” was one of the most important offshoots of the French Revolution, and because Capet’s work spanned both the revolutionary decade of the 1790s and the Napoleonic sequel, her meticulous attention to fashion and to relations within the art world make her an especially interesting case study.
