Abstract
Throughout the part of the romance which follows the death of Galehot and leads up to the beginning of the Queste,1 the love theme (Lancelot, the greatest knight alive, inspired by his love and absolute loyalty to Guinevere) is developed skilfully to preserve continuity. Links with the past are maintained while the advent of a new kind of chivalry is prepared, a chivalry for which Lancelot’s love for Guinevere serves to disqualify rather than qualify him.
