Abstract
This chapter explores Arlen’s first major partnership, with lyricist Ted Koehler. Introduced to each other while Arlen worked as rehearsal pianist on Vincent Youmans’ show Great Day in 1929, they wrote their first hit, “Get Happy,” in the style of a spiritual. They went on to contribute to various stage revues, including at the Cotton Club in Harlem (1930–1934), where they created the jazz- and blues-infused numbers “Stormy Weather,” premiered by Ethel Waters, and “Ill Wind.” Under contract to Warner Bros., Arlen and Koehler moved to Hollywood in 1933, where they wrote in a more lyrical style for the film Let’s Fall in Love. As a singer fronting for various bands, Arlen also made numerous recordings during the early 1930s, including some of the popular Arlen-Koehler songs.
