Abstract The article deals with actuarial reserving techniques used in reinsurance. The impact of reinsurance on the actuarial reserving approach is discussed with a focus on the actuarial methods. In reinsurance, very often, the standard methods, that is, Chain‐Ladder or Bornhuetter Ferguson have to be modified because of specific reinsurance requirements. We introduce some methodical adjustments and illustrate the practical circumstances under which they have been taken into account. The paper ends with some comments on practical applications of reserving methods in reinsurance.
