This carving can be considered the work of Olowe of Ise, one of the 20th century's most outstanding Yoruban artists. In great demand by kings and powerful families from the centre of Nigeria, Olowe was able to create his own style based on virtuosity, high-relief volumes, textures and dynamism. His work is also a symbol of the work done by several artists who gained recognition and repute, despite the fact that they have often remained in anonymity. This sculpture was made at the time when the artist managed to achieve his highest public recognition. It was acquired by Governor Miguel Núñez de Prado, possibly in the late 1920s, shortly after Olowe's success at the British Empire Exhibition held in Wembley (1924).
