As a term of praise, as an insult, and as a relatively neutral synonym for “female poet,” the titlepoetessclearly predates Victorianism. In popular terms, however, the mythic “Poetess” tends to be an insistently Victorianized figure. A heritage rather than a heroine, the Poetess is a trope: through her Victorian writers, male and KEEP AS WRITTEN female, performed as if channeling the secret and often mournful heart of “woman.” “WOMAN” SHOULD BE CAPITALIZED. SORRY IT WASN'T With its appeal to the “pure” emotions of the national and/or imperial private sphere, Poetess performance offered rich, contested resources for developing Victorian, transatlantic, and transnational patriotic literary cultures.
