Mechanism and Causes of Coma and Brain Death

View through CrossRef
Coma and brain death are complex medical conditions that are often misunderstood by the general public. A coma is a state of unconsciousness in which a person is unable to respond to external stimuli, while brain death is the complete and irreversible loss of brain function. Although the medical community understands these conditions, many myths and mysteries still surround them. One common myth is that people in a coma can hear and understand everything happening around them, when in reality, they cannot. Another myth is that brain death is the same as being in a coma, whereas they are, in fact, two distinct conditions. The mysteries surrounding these conditions include the possibility of recovery from a coma and the ethical considerations related to organ donation from brain-dead individuals. This chapter is important because the public needs a better understanding of these conditions to make informed decisions about their own health and the health of their loved ones.
