Building Mulholland Highway: The Road to Mulholland Drive

View through CrossRef
This is the third and concluding installment on the origins, construction, and outcome of the twenty-four-mile mountain highway, now known as Mulholland Drive, completed in 1924. It tells how and why the promoters, homeowners, and city government turned from the original vision of a grand scenic boulevard to settle for a winding, narrow, dirt road, eventually paved but still rural. And, finally, it recounts the successful drive in the 1990s to preserve its character as a scenic country road in its natural terrain, running through a great metropolis.
