O riso de Deméter

The myth of Demeter, in most of its versions, features an episode in which the goddess, mourning the kidnapping of her daughter, laughs. In general, two characters are alternately mentioned as responsible for this act that temporarily integrates the goddess into the human world: Iambe and Baubo. Whether in words or gestures, both appeal to the obscene that shocks and delights the goddess. The article is therefore divided into two sections. The first is dedicated to analysing the two characters based on the main documents that depict them, the Homeric Hymn to Demeter and the Orphic fragment 52 Kern [= 395 F Bernabé]. Then, in the second section, we will consider how this mythical laughter was translated into ritual laughter at various festivals dedicated to Demeter.
