Abstract
This chapter explores the context in which Macdonald wrote: the social and intellectual milieu of British philosophy in the period between the two world wars. It discusses the philosophical landscape in London, where Macdonald did her Ph.D.; in Cambridge, where she did post-doctoral work; and in Oxford, where she got a job in 1937 as a part-time librarian with the opportunity to do some teaching in philosophy. It also discusses the circle around the journal Analysis, which Macdonald helped found and edit. Special attention is given to the circle of women philosophers who supported each other during this period, in which philosophy was a difficult environment for women, and to the Marxist, Communist, and socialist circles of which Macdonald was a part.
