Dance, over the past 50 years, has moved closer to theatre than theatre has moved towards dance. One need only glance at the excit ing theatre alive in the works of Martha Graham, the son et lumiere theatricality of Alwin Nikolais, or the influence of commedia and television soap opera in the creations of Toronto-born James Cunningham. To argue the point even further, I recently heard ofa Toronto dancer who was denied a Canada Council grant because her work was considered to be too much like theatre.
