John Gray (1866–1934), known as “Dorian” (after the hero of Oscar Wilde's novel
The Picture of Dorian Gray
) was a minor poet of the 1890s whose book
Silverpoints
(1893) led to his reputation as being “the most decadent of decadents.” He outlived both reputations. Breaking with Wilde, Gray converted to Roman Catholicism, becoming, after the turn of the century, a respected priest in Edinburgh. Joined there by his lifelong friend André Raffalovich (also a convert), together they were the prime movers behind the building of St. Peter's Roman Catholic church in Morningside. During this period, Gray systematically destroyed evidence linking him to Wilde and his past as “Dorian” Gray. Marking the distance from his “decadent” period, Gray also produced a considerable body of modernist poetry, most notably his collection
