FIGURE. Zhongli Quan. Standing with a sun spring in the shape of a leaf. Hair with a middle leg, long mustaches and a hoe beard and extended herb snibs (a sign of wisdom). The figure is dressed in a lotus leaf cap with long bands down over his shoulders, a long rock and long leg clothes. On the feet shoes with cross toe ends. Underglaze painting. The glaze is bluish white with marks after blisters. The figure is hollow, in some places deep cracks (manufacturing defects). Purchased by Wilhelmina von Hallwyl, 16 February 1909 at Bukowski’s Art Trade, Stockholm. Zhongli Quan was the leader of the eight immortals of Taoism and is shown here dressed as a learned person, holding a sun spring. The eight immortals were some of the most important figures in popular Taoism. They all had different looks, clothes and symbols with which they were associated, as well as their own special powers. Most were originally figures in Chinese history, subsequently mythologized. Zhongli Quan lived under the Handynasty and owned significant forces, including a magical sun spring that could revive dead and turn stones into silver or gold. Figure.
