An exceptional cadastral document from Hellenistic Amathous
An inscription discovered close to the agora of Amathous presents multiple interests. It mentions at least four groups of thirty lots each of land, place names of the surrounding countryside, which have left traces in contemporary toponymes, and personal names. A comparative study shows that it is a question of the resale of chlerouchy lots assigned, doubtlessly after 153 BC by Ptolemy VI to his soldiers or his mariners (triakontorion and triakas have a crew or an effectif of thirty men), who had successfully countered an attack on the island by his brother, Ptolemy VIII Physkon. The resale, a serious and exceptional political act, was, no doubt, caused by the vengeance of Ptolemy VIII, who obtains power of the island and over Alexandria in 145, after the death of his brother. The numbering of the lots, it, too, exceptional, presupposes the filing, no doubt in a temple, not only of the usual registries, but also a graphic cadastral document, which prefigures, better than the Roman cadastral approach by coordinates, our modern cadastral records.
