This chapter reveals Aristotle's influence on Josiah Royce's philosophy of loyalty. Section I, “The Metaphysics of Loyalty in Aristotle and Royce,” demonstrates an Aristotelian influence on Royce's thinking about truth and reality, ultimately taking shape in Royce's metaphysics of loyalty, the foundation of Royce's ethical philosophy. Section II, “The Ethics of Loyalty in Aristotle and Royce,” considers Aristotle's influence on Royce's thinking about friendship, ultimately taking shape in Royce's ethics of loyalty. Section III, “The Metaphysics and Ethics of Community in Aristotle and Royce,” argues for an Aristotelian influence on Royce's thought in the form of his philosophy of community. Drawing from Aristotle's corpus and both published and unpublished manuscripts of Royce, this essay offers historical and philosophical connections between these thinkers.
