Cousin (consobrinus, frater patruelis)

View through CrossRef
AbstractIn Greco‐Roman societies, cousins belonged to the close kinship group. The Greek Anchisteia extended on both the father's and the mother's side to first cousins once removed; cousins were therefore entitled to inherit. They were obliged to pursue a kinsman's murder or permitted to grant forgiveness (IGI3104.13–25). Although agnates legally ranked before cognates, Greek kinship terminology did not differentiate between agnatic or cognatic cousins. Both were termed asanepsios; a first cousin once removed was termedanepsiadous.
