Mitochondrial mechanisms of photobiomodulation. Upon light shining on the tissue, photons pass through cell membranes to directly interact with mitochondria. In the inner membrane of a mitochondrion, photons induce a series of reactions on the respiratory chain, boosting ATP production and regulating downstream signaling pathways which may affect gene translation and expression.
