Abstract
Philipon’s political allegiance became a matter of controversy the moment he emerged from obscurity in the aftermath of the July Revolution, and no consensus has yet been reached as to what his political opinions were, or indeed whether he had any at all. Contemporaries who dismissed caricature as immoral, or at best frivolous, questioned the sincerity of his political commitment.
