Portrait of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in old age

View through Harvard Museums
Seated inside an enclosed throne, with a small opening on the side, is the aged Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The gold throne is decorated with red flowers, green leaves, and very fine tooling. The emperor wears a white jama (robe) decorated with gold ovals. He is hunched over and holds unidentifiable objects in both of his hands. He has a white beard, a white turban with a grey sash, and a gold halo surrounding his head. Behind him one can see the inner side of a black shield with its pink arm cushion and the top of a talwar sword, identifiable with its disc-shaped pommel.
