The Mausoleum Friezes before 1855

View through CrossRef
Abstract The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (modern Bodrum on the south-west coast of Turkey) owed its place among the seven wonders of the world partly to its size and extraordinary architecture, and partly to the enormous quantity of sculpture that embellished it. Architecturally it was very influential: its form was widely imitated and developed during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, and has been echoed in more recent buildings. Its very name acquired a generic use in Latin and later languages as the word for a monumental tomb.
