The Etruscan metropolis of Caere, known today as Cerveteri and located some 45 km northwest of Rome, was situated on a tufa outcrop with a commanding view of the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is famous for its monumental tombs distributed over several necropoleis. Caere flourished in the eighth century
