Carsten Hvistendahl was born and raised in Gothenburg and began painting in her teenage years. The father was a Norwegian consul in Gothenburg. The mother, Signe Hvistendahl, was an artist and the family was featured in artists' circles in Gothenburg. Summer stays at Koön, Marstrand during childhood.
Studies at Valand’s Art School in Gothenburg for Tor Bjurström 1920-21 and 1924-25, for E. Othon-Friesz in Paris 1923-24, for Henrik Sörensen in Paris 1921-22 and 1923-24, and in Holmsbu, Norway summers 1925 and 1926, at Carl Wilhelmson’s Painting School in Stockholm in the autumn of 1925 and 1926, and at Konsthögskolan 1927-29.
Mother and son were studying at the same school.
He received Carl Larsson scholarship in 1929; several study trips and many stays in southern Europe over the years, especially the Basque Country in Spain.
Recurrent summer stays in Bohusländer with Fjällbackaskärgården as central point. He first visited the area in 1926, buys houses on Fläskö in 1946.
Most solo and collective exhibitions over the years.
Hvistendahl is a fellow school student and has all depicted the residential landscape, but is also constantly returning to Norway, Brittany and southern Europe.
In the 1960s he begins to work in a new technique, glass mosaic. Several large missions in which he sometimes mixes nest granite with Italian marble mosaic. Several of its works were made in sections in the pork studio, where he cooperated with Italian mosaics.

Represented at Nationalmuseum, Modermuseum, both in Stockholm, Göteborg Museum of Art, Gävle Museum of Art and Borås Museum of Art and Riksdag.
The gift comprises three paintings by Carsten Hvistendahl from about 1935, about 1940 and 1963 and a portrait, a painting by Nils Nilsson in 1928; UM027894 - UM027897 and peripheral material and is bestowed by the artist’s daughter.
