The painting was previously attributed to Aelbert Cuyp but is the work of van der Hulst, a little known landscape painter (Beck 1972, p. 247-259), whose works have been confused with the works of his contemporaries in Haarlem, Frans de Hulst (Beck, IV, 1991, p. 185-186) and Jan van Goyen, who have greatly influenced him. This painting should be compared to his signed oil on canvas “Stormen,” in a private collection in Brussels (London 1986, No. 98).
