Mosaic glass fragment
View through Europeana Collections
On white background, the small glass fragment shows several flowers in Millefiori technique, separated from each other by a turquoise grid in the shape of a honeycomb. A blossom consists of a red dot with black contour as its core. A white circle can be seen in one part of the flowers and a yellow one in others. White circles with black contour form the petals around this core.
In Roman times, colored, ornamented glass was used for vessels, mosaics, wall decorations and furniture decorations.
Different colored glasses were formed into tubes and rods for production. These were squeezed and heated, creating a long staff. The glass, now cut into slices, had various amorphous or floral patterns.
