From Venice to Ravenna

The chapter presents a year in Byron's life (1819) trying to stay as close to it as possible. This is the year in which Byron finally decides to leave Venice and settle in Ravenna with Teresa Guiccioli. This is a move from promiscuity to fidelity. The year is attended by confusion of all kinds. Byron cannot make up his mind whether to go to Ravenna or return to England or move to South America. Teresa advertises her desperation and manipulates both her father and Byron by illnesses which are both real and psychosomatic. The chapter argues that the movement from promiscuous Venice to Ravenna’s stability echoes that of Don Juan’s move from adulterous Seville to the eros-centred stability of Haidee’s isle, but notes that what is set out in the poem precedes rather than follows what occurs in the life.
