Nancy Storace’s Annus Horribilis and Celeste Coltellini, 1785–86

The chapter discusses how childbirth resulted in a protracted loss of voice for Nancy Storace as prima donna of the Vienna court Italian opera company. Celeste Coltellini had been engaged as an altra prima donna, and she carried the first half of the season. After Storace recovered her voice, the two sang together. It shows that, as originally planned, Le nozze di Figaro would have cast Coltellini as Susanna and Storace as the Countess. Among other singers, a new mezzo carattere, Vincenzo Calvesi, replaced Giuseppe Viganoni. The great musico Luigi Marchesi enthralled the city in the opera seria Giulio Sabino
