DISCUSSIONS ON THE QUALIFICATION OF TERMINOLOGYAS AN INDEPENDENT LINGUISTIC SCIENCE IN CHINESE LINGUISTICS
View through CrossRef
The article explores the history of the formation of terminology as an independent linguistic discipline in Chinese linguistics. It provides a detailed analysis of studies concerning the concept of “term,” along with an overview of scientific approaches to the language of specialization and scientific concepts. The focus lies on the development of terminology in China, beginning with early investigations into ancient scientific and technical terminology, progressing through contemporary theories of translating specialized terms, and culminating in state-supported initiatives following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. The growth of Chinese terminology is discussed from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The reciprocal impact of Russian linguists’ work in the area of terminology is examined, alongside the process of term borrowing. A substantiated conclusion is drawn affirming that, in present-day China, terminology represents a multifaceted and evolving discipline. It is argued that the advancement of the Chinese terminological system across diverse fields of science plays a pivotal role in fostering numerous areas of scholarly inquiry, encompassing philosophy and social sciences alike. Systematic structuring of terminological frameworks generates novel concepts, categories, and notions capable of reflecting extensive practices and theoretical breakthroughs intrinsic to socialism with Chinese characteristics. Newly coined Chinese terms prove accessible, comprehensible, and widely embraced by the global academic community. Establishing terminology as a distinct branch of linguistic science enhances the construction of a discursive framework, thereby bolstering China’s standing in international dialogue. Although grounded in solid historical foundations, the overall progression of terminology commenced comparatively later than other disciplines.
