Turkish and Uyghur verb-verb complexes in contrast

View through CrossRef
This chapter focuses on two types of V-V complexes, the gerundive type and the converb type, in Turkish and Uyghur. Comparison of the two languages reveals that the -Ip converb type is predominant in Uyghur, whereas the -A gerundive type is predominant in Turkish. The increased use of V-V complexes of the -Ip converb type in Uyghur reflects the areal linguistic feature of explicator/vector verbs abundantly found in Indo-Aryan languages. Uyghur stands in marked contrast to Turkish, which has only an impoverished system of V-V complexes and instead has recourse to the strategy of using analytic constructions with lexically derived adverbs. As a result, while grammaticalization of converbial complexes is often found in Uyghur, there is no instance of grammaticalized bound suffixes in Turkish that originate from converbial complexes.
