Abstract
Robert LeVine's first work among the Gusii in Kenya, part of Beatrice and John Whiting's Six Culture study, prepared him for a life of prodigious fieldwork and theory building. He has returned to Kenya multiple times, and that research has been followed by work in Nigeria, Mexico, Nepal, Zambia, and Venezuela. “Bob” LeVine (b. 1932) began his graduate career at the University of Chicago, but left there in 1953 when he found no one to support his interest in psychological anthropology. The Kardiner and Linton seminars at Columbia were ending, and so LeVine chose Harvard University where he studied anthropology under Fred Eggan and psychoanalysis under David M. Schneider.
