Shawl decorated with Jaspe (ikat)

View through Europeana Collections
The shawl (in Spanish perraje) is woven in a hip loom with cotton and acrylic fabric. The shawl consists of two pieces of woven textile that are sewn together. Furthermore, the shawl is decorated with fringes at both ends and is colored using the jaspe technique (ikat technique). Jaspe is a dyeing technique in knots where decorative motifs are produced. In this technique, specific parts of the thread are covered (by tying the thread in specific places) to prevent these parts from becoming coloured when the thread is dipped in the paint. When the knots are undone, after dyeing, the thread contains dyed and unpainted segments. During weaving, figures are formed with these threads.A shawl is used exclusively by women to cover the upper part of the body (torso, shoulders). It is a rectangular garment used for protection against the cold, for covering the head in church or during processions, and for carrying babies on the back. This shawl is for everyday use and is specifically intended for a woman. Furthermore, the shawl is decorated with stripes of different widths in a variety of colors.‖ Santiago Atitlán is located in the department of Sololá.
