A lending library was operated in the Didaskaleion of Crete in Heraklion since the beginning of its establishment in 1901. It was a very important facility, which provided educational tools to the students of that time. After all, in the first years of the operation of the Didaskaleion, a municipal library had not yet been established in Heraklion. The municipal library was founded in 1908. In the last surviving consolidated list of books of the Didaskaleion, 666 titles were found, included in 5 Classification Categories (C.C.): a. Letters - Science - Art. b. Scientific. c. Free readings. d. Ancillary. e. Didactic. The above classification did not correspond to any strict thematic categorization given that some books of the same subject were classified in different C.C..
The C.C. "Letters - Science - Arts" included books on Greek and foreign literature, literary theory, history, philosophy, folklore and theology.
The book ''General history of art'' belonged to the category "Letters - Science - Arts" of the lending library of the Didaskaleion of Crete in Heraklion. This is the second volume of the work by Solomon Reinach (1858-1932) and Roger Peyre (1848-1923), written to provide a general (historical, theoretical and critical) survey of art from prehistoric times to the beginning of the 20th century. More specifically, reference is made to the French, Flemish and German Renaissance, to the Italian decline and the Spanish School, as well as to Holland, Flanders and France of the 17th century, to French art of the 15th century, to the English School, to art during the 10th century and finally to the Post-Byzantine and modern Greek art. The book was translated by Pantelis Prevelakis (1909-1986), professor of Art History at the Academy of Fine Arts, translator and one of the main representatives of the 30s generation in Greek prose.
