Integrative Gastroenterology for Children, Adolescents, and Parents
View through CrossRef
Gastrointestinal complaints are common among pediatric patients. Many of these disorders are chronic and complex, resulting from an interplay of biology, psychopathology, genetics, microbiome disruption, and diet. There is a growing interest among patients, parents, and providers in using an integrative approach for the treatment of these disorders. Mind–body practices, including yoga, hypnotherapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy, can improve quality of life for children with a variety of GI complaints. Iberogast and licorice supplements may benefit those with dyspepsia; enteric-coated peppermint can reduce pain in children with irritable bowel syndrome. Curcumin, probiotics, and dietary interventions have evidence for use in children with inflammatory bowel disease. Dietary changes, exercise, and probiotics can impact the course of pediatric non-alcoholic liver disease. Integrative medicine approaches to pediatric GI disorders, when used in conjunction with standard medical care, are safe and well tolerated.
