Transnational Networks of Salafi ʿUlama
View through CrossRef
This chapter examines the transnational networks of ʿulama with respect to Shiʿa theology and polity. The chapter uncovers the various positions toward the Shiʿa advocated by the ʿulama who operate as transnational actors, fostering anti-Shiʿa narratives in the name of preserving Sunni solidarity. The chapter looks into the dynamics of the networks of the ʿulama on the Shiʿa question while examining how local, regional, and global circumstances influence the intensity and frequency of the anti-Shiʿa positions. It analyzes the cooperation between the ʿulama in the promotion of their interpretations of Shiʿa theology and activities. The chapter questions whether the haraki/quietist dichotomy is relevant to understanding the positions of the Salafi ʿulama on sectarian matters.
