Das deutsche Wort »Kitsch« ist in den 1940er Jahren zu einem internationalen Begriff geworden, dessen Bedeutung zwischen ideologiekritischer Ablehnung und postmoderner Affirmation oszilliert. Doch meint das Schlagwort in unterschiedlichen nationalen Diskurstraditionen stets dasselbe? Warum werden bestimmte künstlerische oder alltagsästhetische Produkte aus anderen Kulturen als Kitsch bezeichnet, und wie verhält es sich mit dieser »Nationalisierung« von Kitsch? An Beispielen aus Musik-, Literatur-, Kunst- und Filmwissenschaft untersuchen die Beiträge des Bandes die Polaritäten und Paradoxien, denen der Begriff »Kitsch« in verschiedenen Kulturen und Nationen ausgesetzt ist.
