Abstract
Manuel I Comnenus (or Komnenos) ruled the Byzantine Empire from 1143 until 1180. An energetic emperor who saw possibilities everywhere, he was an indefatigable and daring soldier who led military campaigns in person and won the affection of his troops by sharing their dangers and discomforts. Manuel I used the wealth, military machine, and internal stability constructed by his grandfather, Alexius I (1081–1118), and his father, John II (1118–1143). He inherited an empire much stronger than at any time for a century.
