Oscar I, born July 4, 1799 in Paris, died July 8, 1859 at Stockholm Castle in Stockholm, was king of Sweden and Norway from 1844 to 1859, married on May 22, 1823 to Josefina of Leuchtenberg (granddaughter of the French Empress Joséphine). The full name of Oscar I was Joseph François Oscar, who became Josef Frans Oscar in Swedish. The king himself and modern writers have spelled the royal name Oscar, while the Swedish royal house uses the spelling Oskar.
