Abstract By the time Terri Schiavo died on March 31, 2005, at Hospice of the Florida Suncoast in Clearwater, the nation—indeed the world—had eavesdropped on a family conflict with no equal, had witnessed unprecedented legislative machinations in the state capital and in Washington, and had seen dozens of courts hear and rule on scores of motions and pleadings that addressed cornerstone issues in end-of-life care: What are the powers of guardians and other surrogates? How much evidence is needed before their requests or refusals are honored? What is the role of government in bedside medical decisions? How should “disability” be deined?
