Framing Terri Schiavo: Gender, Disability, and Fetal Protection
View through CrossRef
Abstract
For more than a decade, Theresa Marie Schiavo’s family members fought to control her care, involving not only state and federal courts, but also Florida’s Legislature and chief executive, and, ultimately, the Congress and the President of United States. While the blogosphere hyperventilated, ethicists, health care providers, and legal professionals issued calls for universal advance care planning. Meanwhile, the Roman Catholic Church and legislators in a number of states sought to limit the kinds of medical interventions to which such advance directives could apply.
