Porträt Edmund Gibson (1669-1748)
View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of Edmund Gibson. In this view, the British bishop is depicted as a half-figure in the three-quarter profile facing to the left sitting on a chair. His head is slightly turned to the right towards the observer. He carries wig and the ornat typical of a bishop. His right hand is based on a book, a finger is jammed and probably marks a place in the book. His left hand rests on the armchair.
Edmund Gibson was bishop of Lincoln and London. In addition, he was a jurist and antiquity researcher. He was considered one of the founding members of Foundling Hospital in London. He was actively involved in the discussions about the rights and privileges of the convocation, which encouraged him to publish the Codex juris ecclesiastici in 1713 in two volumes, a work that dealt extensively with the rights and duties of the English clergy.
Other copies of this paper are available at the British Museum, the Austrian National Library in Vienna and the National Portrait Gallery.
