A new nickelphilous species of Alyssum (Cruciferae) from Portugal: Alyssum pintodasilvae T. R. Dudley

SummaryNickel hyperaccumulation of taxa of Alyssum Section Odontarrhena growing on serpentine substrates has been well documented in recent years by several investigators. One such taxon from Portugal, previously described as A. serpyllifolium subspecies lusitanicum T. R. Dudley & A. R. Pinto da Silva, is A. pintodasilvae T. R. Dudley, sp. nov. This new species is distinguished by demonstrating a maximum nickel‐hyperaccumulating capability of nearly 1.44% tissue concentration on dry weight basis as contrasted to the non‐serpentine A. serpyllifolium Desfontaines which possesses a nickel‐hyperaccumulation potential of no more than 0.0065%. Numerous morphological character discontinuites also support the taxonomic judgement that A. pintodasilvae is bost recognized at full specific rank.
