Proclamation: Widowhood and Elizabeth Ann Seton
View through CrossRef
Widowhood has been one of the least discussed states of singleness in recent decades. This is despite both real and present poverty of many widows, and the scriptural mandate for Christians to care for the widows in their midst. Christians in previous ages have often cared for widows by providing communities for them (an Order of Widows). Perhaps Christians mistakenly believe widowhood is no longer really a problem—or perhaps an American fear of death means we avoid those associated with death. Not to face death, however, means also avoiding part of the Gospel message. Elizabeth Ann Seton, a 19th century American widow, mother of five, and founder of a religious community, provides a distinctive look at death, resurrection, and hope in Christ. She and her community of widows help proclaim Christ’s life, death, and resurrection to a church that needs to see Christ in this life of singleness.
