Dolores Huerta Haciendo Más Caras

This chapter explores the life and career of the famous community activist Dolores Huerta as a Catholic woman lay leader through Gloria Anzaldúa’s theory of haciendo caras. This chapter brings together interviews, digital archival materials, and personal stories along with theoretical frameworks from Chicana studies and LatinoXa theologies to delve into understanding Dolores Huerta’s complex relationship with Catholicism. The chapter begins by presenting a discussion on Anzaldúa’s notion of haciendo caras as well as an expansion of haciendo más caras to the theory. Second, the chapter will explore Dolores Huerta as raised in a world haciendo caras to discuss her Catholic upbringing and family story. It will then move toward ripping the seams and recrafting the interfacing to discuss Huerta’s move to a life of solidarity as a community organizer with farm workers. Finally, the chapter will use “hacienda más caras” to show Huerta’s ongoing impact as a Catholic lay woman leader at the age of 91.
