Abstract
Introduction to, analysis of and text of an a highly accomplished oral narrative of Sunjata by Kande Kanote, a Khasonka griot based at Nioro, recorded in c.1907 by French anthropologist and archaeologist De Zeltner and published in French in 1913. Kanote's virtuoso performance is analysed, as is the complex motivations and activities of its French transcriber, a folklorist, collector of African textiles and craniologist.
