Late summer of 1863 finally saw Gabe’s promotion to brigadier general arrive, and just in time for him to be transferred to East Tennessee to assist General James Longstreet as he faced Federal General Ambrose Burnside. Nannie’s moods became more pronounced, as were Gabe’s efforts to cheer her up. Gabe also became close to Nannie’s brother Major John Radford.
