The smile of fortune and the bitterness of fate. Alexander Sculteti (c. 1485–1570), friend of Nicolaus Copernicus

Urodzony ok. 1485 roku syn rajcy tczewskiego studiował najpierw w Krakowie (1503-1508), a następnie w Rzymie, gdzie zdobył dyplom doktora obojga praw. Dzięki swoim talentom oraz przynależności do „familii” kardynała Aleksandra Farnese (przyszłego papieża Pawła III) Sculteti uzyskał w 1514 roku kanonie w Dorpacie i w Hapsal, a w 1519 roku w Rewlu oraz we Fromborku. W obliczu reformacji Sculteti, dostrzegał konieczność reformy Kościoła, bronił praw Giesego, wyznaczonego przez schorowanego biskupa Maurycego Ferbera na swojego koadiutora. Naraził się wówczas biskupowi chełmińskiemu Janowi Dantyszkowi oraz sekretarzowi królewskiemu Stanisławowi Hozjuszowi. Oskarżony przez nich o złamanie celibatu oraz wyznawanie herezji został przez króla skazany na banicję, toteż jesienią 1540 roku wyjechał do Rzymu. Zaliczany był do kręgu zwolenników soboru trydenckiego i uczestniczył w jego otwarciu. Zmarł w 1570 roku Rzymie, a jego księgozbiór przeszedł na własność bractwa "S. Maria dell‵ Anima".
