Polly Klaas (1981–1993) was kidnapped from her bedroom, sexually abused, and murdered when she was 12 years old. Her investigation was the first missing child investigation to utilize technology in search efforts. Polly's death influenced the passage of California's Three Strikes law and statewide AMBER Alert™ system for missing children. The tragic death helped establish a standard law enforcement response to child abduction that had not previously existed and revolutionized community efforts in searching for missing children.
